Professor Stephen David Lawn was remembered and greatly missed at the 47th Union World Conference on Lung Health held in Liverpool last month, following his death from a cerebral tumour on 23 September, 2016. The Stephen Lawn Memorial Fund for TB and AIDS Research Leadership has been set up to commemorate his life and work.
Professor Lawn, was a leading specialist in HIV and TB, and recipient of The Union Scientific Prize in 2006. He made major contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of TB among populations affected by HIV/AIDS and to reducing the burden of HIV-associated TB.
The Stephen Lawn Memorial Fund will support a lecture, to be given annually at the time of World TB day. In 2017, this will be on 13 March in London, UK and on 16 March in Cape Town, South Africa by a leading TB researcher. The Fund will also award a monetary prize for an upcoming researcher conducting promising work focused on reducing the disease burden of TB and HIV/AIDS in Africa. Prize applications will open in March 2017 along with other Union awards.
The fund will be jointly managed by the TB Centre in London, The Union in Paris, and the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre in Cape Town.
Professor Lawn will be remembered in to key articles in December’s issue of the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. For World AIDS Day on 1 December there is an editorial on his work on HIV and TB entitled The contributions of Steve Lawn to the science, advocacy and policy of HIV-associated TB by Annelies van Rie and Ted Cohen; and an obituary written by Anthony D. Harries and Linda-Gail Bekker.
