As part of an initiative to raise awareness of tuberculosis (TB) in Meghalaya, India, local people have been invited to help paint TB information on walls across the state.
This intervention started in February 2023, and 14 walls in six districts of Meghalaya have been painted by schools, college students, young people, and self-help groups (SHGs are key to providing self-employment and empowerment to women). This is the first wall painting competition organised by the state for community participation.
The paintings depict content and pictures that highlight TB prevention, treatment, diagnosis, and other important information.
The National Technical Support Unit (NTSU) is spearheading this TB awareness-raising initiative, which is all part of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease's Advocacy, Communications and Social Mobilization (ACSM) program. The aim is to support National TB Elimination Program delivery by reducing the deep-seated stigma attached with TB and mobilise communities towards increased demand for TB services.
