Important step forward in UK tobacco control

As global health leaders, hosts of the World Conference on Tobacco Control 2025 and authors of the Dublin Declaration, The Union welcomes the UK Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 as a strong example of translating global tobacco control promises into purposeful national action. The Act’s aim of a smoke-free generation, safeguarding children from nicotine marketing and youth-targeted products, and stronger enforcement powers reflect the Dublin Declaration’s highest priorities.

Together, these elements show the Tobacco and Vapes Act is a concrete national implementation of the Dublin Declaration, demonstrating the ambition and accountability required to drive progress toward ending the tobacco epidemic and protecting future generations from addiction and harm.

The declaration called on governments to adopt bold policies capable of delivering a lasting public health impact. The UK’s approach shows how countries can respond to evolving industry tactics. We hope this legislation will encourage more governments to pursue similar measures to protect children, reduce health risks and move toward a tobacco-free future.
