Since 1920, The Union has been at the centre of the fight against tuberculosis (TB) and lung disease. Along the way The Union became many different things to many different people: a membership organisation, a scientific body, an implementation partner, and an advocacy and communications voice.

In September 2024, Prof Guy Marks, President, explained: "As we embark on our second century, it is important that we take the opportunity to remind ourselves of who we are and our purpose.

"In collaboration with members and colleagues across The Union, we have reinvigorated our vision, mission and values. To achieve our vision and mission, we embody our core values in everything we do."

In order to celebrate those colleagues who shine in their demonstration of our values, The Union launched the Annual Values Awards. The winners of this award are decided by Dr Cassandra Kelly-Cirino, Executive Director, and Prof Guy Marks.

Last year, the Annual Values Award was presented to Alpha Panda, Liaison Manager, Office of the Executive Director & Board Coordinator, Thazin, HR Manager, The Union Myanmar Office, and Madhava Sai Sivapuram, Community Connect Manager.

Thazin was recognised for her outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment during exceptionally challenging circumstances faced by The Union Myanmar team.

What is your role at The Union?

My role at The Union is that of HR Manager. I am responsible for overseeing and supervising daily operational HR functions, while also supporting senior leadership in making strategic HR decisions that strengthen our people management and overall organisational effectiveness.

How did you feel when you found out that you had won the Values Award?

I was deeply honoured to learn that I had been selected for the Values Award. I am sincerely grateful to the colleagues who nominated me and recognised my efforts.

Why is it important to you to embody the Union Values in your work?

The values of The Union are fundamental and essential for all of us. They also closely align with my own personal values, which makes it natural and meaningful for me to uphold them in my work. Embodying these values is crucial to delivering high-quality outcomes and ensuring that our daily operations are carried out efficiently, professionally, and in line with the organisation’s mission and vision.

What does it mean to you to work at The Union?

I first joined The Union in 2015 as an HR Manager and returned in 2024 to continue in this role. Working here is deeply meaningful to me because it allows me to contribute to an international humanitarian mission that supports vulnerable communities in Myanmar. I take pride in supporting daily operations, strategic decision-making and programme activities while upholding the organisation’s core values. Being part of this team motivates me to lead with integrity, guide my colleagues, and make a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.
