The seventh edition of The Union’s popular technical guide entitled ‘Management of Tuberculosis: A Guide to Essential Practice’, is now available online in French and Spanish.
Management of Tuberculosis, also known as ‘The Orange Guide’ for its recognisable orange cover, was first published in 1986. Widely used reference for health workers worldwide, this is The Union’s most popular and widely used publication. Each new revision reflects the changing dynamics of the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and the evolving methods for TB management.
In the November issue of the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IJTLD), Union Senior Advisor Dr Riitta Dlodlo, Dr Grania Brigden, The Union’s Director of TB, Union past-President Dr Jeremiah Chakaya Muhwa and Dr Einar Heldal, Senior Consultant, contributed an editorial ‘Working with national TB programmes to End TB: The Union´s 7th edition of the Orange Guide´. The editorial highlighted that the Orange Guide is considered the blueprint for national TB guidelines around the world, and that both the Union journals, IJTLD and Public Health Action, along with The Union’s technical publications such as the Orange Guide, work to support and share knowledge with National Tuberculosis Programmes.
This latest edition, launched in English at the 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health and now available in both French and Spanish, includes new information on bacteriological diagnosis of TB, management of people with tuberculous infection, co-management of people with TB and selected comorbidities, such as HIV infection, diabetes mellitus and tobacco use. The guide also contains a chapter on the treatment of drug-resistant TB and prevention of TB.
Revised to include support with creating a register for management of presumptive TB and a form for quarterly facility TB reports. These additional tools will help local health staff start to actively use routinely available TB data to find ‘missing’ people with TB, closing gaps in TB care cascades and ensuring good quality TB services.
