UK air quality expert to lead off the 44th Union World Conference on Lung Health

Prof Ross Anderson MD MSC FFPH FRCP FMEDSci is an epidemiologist and public health specialist with a medical background. He is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Scientific Advisory Committee for the Review of Evidence of Health Aspects of Air Pollution (REVIHAAP) and for Health Risks of Air Pollution in Europe (HRAPIE). He is a co-chair of two expert groups within the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors programme: outdoor air pollution and chronic respiratory disease.

Other recent activities include serving on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the recent WHO updates of outdoor and indoor air quality guidelines, membership of the US Health Effects Institute Review Committee and Steering Committee of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood I (ISAAC). Post-retirement he works part-time at St George's, University of London and King's College London. He is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

• Dr Diane Havlir (USA) on "Are we winning the battle against HIV?"
• Prof Innes Asher (New Zealand) on "Asthma: the forgotten epidemic"
• Prof Heather Zar (South Africa) on "Air pollution control: only for rich countries?"

The Union World Conference on Lung Health is the largest annual conference focused on the issues as they affect low- and middle-income countries. More than 2,500 delegates from 120 countries are expected to attend the five-day scientific conference.
