In just four months’ time, the first ever United Nations High-Level Meeting (UN HLM) on tuberculosis (TB) will be held in New York -- 26 September 2018. The Union is urging world leaders to commit to closing the gaps on TB diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
At present, TB kills more people each year than any other communicable disease – in 2016, this was 1.7 million deaths. But it is preventable, treatable, curable.
This week, The Union will host a side event with FIRS and KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation at the 71st WHO World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva. Participants will discuss the high-impact strategies needed to close critical gaps in the globala response to TB and how to maximise the impact of the HLM on TB. After the expert panel discussion, The Union will launch a new report on the silent epidemic of child TB.
“Without committed leadership, we will never end TB. On the contrary, TB will continue to be a disease that features in our past, present and future,” said José Luis Castro, Executive Director of The Union.

Following the HLM on TB, the 2018 United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs will be held on 27 September. This will provide a crucial opportunity to mobilise political leadership and new resources and action to improve the lives of people affected by NCDs worldwide.
