The Interactive Civil Society Hearing for the UN High-Level Meeting (HLM) on TB is taking place to enable those involved in the work to end TB to contribute to the preparations for the HLM on 26 September 2018.
The Interactive Civil Society Hearing for the UN High-Level Meeting (HLM) on tuberculosis (TB) is taking place today in New York. The Hearing has been convened to enable those involved in the work to end TB to contribute to the preparations for the HLM on 26 September 2018.
The Hearing will focus on the current state of efforts in the fight against TB, and the need to accelerate the response to the TB epidemic. Participants will be invited to contribute to the key priorities for the HLM.
The one-day meeting began with welcoming remarks from António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Lucica Ditiu, Executive Director of Stop TB Partnership, Dr Eric Goosby, UN Special Envoy on TB, and Ingrid Schoeman from TB Proof and a member of The Union’s Board.
The day continues with four panel discussions covering a range of topics and experts, each with a question and answer session from those attending. Union board member Blessina Kumar, Chair of the Global Coalition of Tuberculosis Activists will speak in the afternoon panel session on Partnerships for success – the role of communities in an equitable, person-centred rights-based response.

Union representatives attending the meeting will continue to call for five key outputs from the HLM, namely:
- Reach all people by closing the gaps on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
- Transform the TB response to be equitable, rights-based, and people-centred
- Invest the funds necessary to end TB.
- Accelerate development of essential new tools to end TB
- Commit to decisive and accountable global leadership, including regular UN reporting and review.
