In the lead up to World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) on 31 May, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) participated in a special webinar, A Tobacco Endgame is Imperative for Sustainable Development.

The webinar brought together experts, including Michelle Reyes, Technical Advisor (Philippines), The Union, to discuss the threat tobacco continues to pose to the sustainable development of countries worldwide.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that this year’s WNTD theme, ‘tobacco threatens us all’, has been chosen to highlight the link between use of tobacco products, tobacco control and sustainable development; tobacco not only damages health, it affects food security, gender equity, education, economic growth and the environment. The webinar will discuss these themes and how to ensure the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are met by 2030.

The expert panel also featured:

  • Professor Rama Kant, WHO Director General's WNTD Awardee 2005; 2012 President of Association of Surgeons of India; former Vice President SAARC Surgeons; and founder-President of Vote For Health (formerly Indian Society Against Smoking)
  • Cloe Franko, Senior International Organizer, Challenge Big Tobacco, Corporate Accountability International; and Network for Accountability of Tobacco Transnationals (NATT) leadership
