The Union, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care, conducted the first national SORT IT course for operational research in Harare in July. The course, facilitated by The Union’s Centre for Operational Research, focuses on the analysis of available tuberculosis (TB) data in order to maximise operational efficiency.
The course was inaugurated by Zimbabwe Secretary for Health and Child Care Dr Gerald Gwinji, who spoke to course participants about the potential to put Zimbabwe’s monitoring and evaluation tools from the TB and HIV programmes to work by increasing capacity to analyse and understand that data.
Twelve members from the National TB Programme came from across the country to attend the course and each developed a research protocol on TB and HIV. Participants will run their experiments over the next nine months and return in April 2018 for the third module on scientific paper writing and submission to a scientific, peer-reviewed journal.
The SORT IT course will enhance the capacity of health professionals running the National TB Programme to better interpret data and understand disease patterns.
SORT IT - Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative - aims to improve health care delivery and public health through operational research. The programme was developed by The Union, Médecins Sans Frontières and the WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases.
