The Union Zimbabwe Office in Harare is planning an event hosted by 55 local and traditional leaders in the district.
As part of a number of activities to mark World TB Day, The Union Zimbabwe Office in Harare held a community discussion forum with 55 local and traditional leaders to make them more aware of TB and get buy-in from the local leaders in Mangwe district. The district will be holding the national commemorations on March 29. The leaders have all expressed excitement about hosting the event and they have pledged to support The Union in its efforts on the day.
Other events have also been planned. A media field trip has been organised to the hosting district, which is Mangwe District, Matabeleland South Province. The media field trip will coincide with World TB Day activities and will include health journalists that The Union has worked with in the media mentorship programme. Outreach services (screening for tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and diabetes) have also been planned in the host district from 24 to 31 March, with the service on the day of the commemoration being offered via mobile truck. Throughout the period, The Union’s Zimbabwe Office will be exhibiting and disseminating TB information.
The office will also be talking about TB and raising awareness of World TB Day on national radio stations, having secured 15 minutes slots every Thursday throughout March.
Across the globe on World TB Day, The Union is declaring It’s time for action! It’s time to End TB. World TB Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns which are marked by the World Health Organization (WHO). The first World TB Day was held on 24 March 1982 to commemorate the discovery of M. tuberculosis by Professor Robert Koch one hundred years previously.
