World TB Day 2024
On World TB Day, we must reaffirm our commitment to end tuberculosis (TB), by harnessing the latest evidence and most effective tools at our disposal. A world free of TB can only be achieved collectively – everyone has a role to play in eradicating this disease.
Message from Her Imperial Highness Crown Princess Akishino of Japan, Honorary Member of The Union:
"I would like to express my sincere respects to healthcare workers who have contributed to the remarkable recovery from the severe impact of COVID-19. While we see substantial progress in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, tuberculosis remains a leading cause of death and human suffering in many countries and areas.
Large numbers of people are still threatened today not only by infectious diseases, but also by disasters such as conflicts and wars, and earthquakes and floods. I would like to send my sympathies to people who suffer such severe hardship and express my gratitude to all healthcare workers and professionals, who continue working hard caring for people’s lives and health in the face of difficult circumstances themselves.
Although tuberculosis is still a severe problem around the world, there is some good news. That is, the development of new technologies such as battery-operated X-ray units, and promising steps towards more effective vaccines. I hope that the widespread use of such technologies will benefit all people by protecting them against tuberculosis, especially vulnerable people such as children, women, and the elderly, and that better diagnosis, prevention and treatment of tuberculosis will become available.
On World TB Day, let us gather our strength and say "Yes! We can end TB!”"
