In the health publication STAT, today, Executive Director of The Union, José Luis Castro, responds strongly to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recently published ‘global priority pathogen list’. In his opinion piece Mr Castro condemns the failure to include tuberculosis (TB) on this list as a drastic mistake which must be corrected.
Mr Castro’s op-ed appears alongside one from WHO assistant director-general for health systems and innovation, Marie-Paule Kieny, Phd, in which she argues that the omission of TB from the list was neither ‘an oversight’, nor ‘an attempt to take funding and attention away from this important disease’.
Mr Castro warns that excluding TB from the list designed to influence the decisions of policy makers ‘could not have come at a worse time’. He calls on WHO to rectify the mistake of TB’s omission from the list and to ‘revise the list to portray a more evidence-based picture of public health research priorities’.
