Union Courses offers a wide range of training that enables clinicians, programme managers and other healthcare professionals to develop and strengthen their knowledge and skills, in order to provide quality care for patients.
Our courses address how to improve healthcare and public health – with courses from the International Management Development Programme (IMDP) and courses in Operational Research. There are also courses specialising in the clinical and programmatic aspects of tuberculosis (TB), multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), TB-HIV, as well as courses building capacity for effective tobacco control programmes.
IMDP
The IMDP courses have been developed by The Union to address challenges faced by national programme managers and healthcare administrators in limited-resource settings and to help countries improve the management of health programmes.
The first IMDP course of 2018 focuses on Performance-Oriented Project Management and will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 16 to 20 April. Register now to attend.
TB and Lung Health
The TB and Lung Health courses provide new knowledge and skills for health practitioners and policy makers, contributing to the implementation of public health programmes in TB, MDR-TB, TB-HIV and Childhood TB.
Among the courses offered in 2018 are the Principles of Tuberculosis Care and Prevention: Translating Knowledge to Action, held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from 12 to 21 March (Register now to attend) and Curso Internacional de Manejo Clínico de Pacientes con Coinfección TB-VIH, a Spanish speaking course taking place in Lima Peru from 19 to 27 March. In an impact survey sent in July 2017 to course participants from 2016, 90 percent agreed that they learned something new in the course attended; 97 percent felt the knowledge and skills acquired were relevant to their everyday work and 90 percent agreed that the course had an impact on the productivity of their work.
Tobacco Control
The Union’s tobacco control courses are designed to strengthen capacity for effective tobacco control programmes in countries with the highest burden of tobacco use. Technical training courses help countries meet requirements under the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). The courses are based on WHO FCTC guidelines, the MPOWER tobacco control strategy and global best practice.
Operational Research
The Union’s Centre for Operational Research provides specialised training focused on improving health care delivery and public health through its Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) courses.
By the end of the course, participants will have designed a protocol, carried out research, analysed the results, written up a scientific paper and submitted the paper to a peer-reviewed journal for publication.
Developed in 2009 by The Union in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and since 2012 in conjunction with the WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, these courses have had outstanding results.
The Centre’s courses have lead to 912 papers being published to date (150 published in 2017). 68 percent of 267 papers published from SORT IT courses are judged to have influenced policy and practice 18 months later and 70 percent of 73 papers published by COR fellows are judged to have done the same.
